Bike loans

The bike loan scheme began in September 2009.

How it works

You give us a deposit of $100 (and we photocopy your student card), and we give you a bike, helmet, a lock and lights. You can keep it for up to six months. Every month, you bring it along to a bike workshop for a check-up and maintenance. When you bring everything back, we subtract $10/month from your deposit, and give you the rest back.

The bikes

The bikes are a range of styles, all appropriate for Sydney roads. If you don’t like the bike that’s available when we contact you, you don’t have to borrow it—there are lots of other places to get second-hand bikes.

Waiting list

The scheme currently has a fleet of 17 bikes. Most are currently loaned out. When all are loaned out, a queue will be established (visible below) and when a bike is returned, the next person in the waiting list will be offered the bike. The order of the waiting list is strictly first-in-first-out, with the following exception: members of Arc @ UNSW will be given preference – their names are marked with an asterisk below. If you are an Arc member and you apply, you will move in front of the non-Arc members.

Half the bikes are reserved for women.

Acknowledgements

Many thanks to Karen from the Bicycle Recycling Network and the Macquarie Uni Bike Club for donating the bicycles, and to Arc @ UNSW for providing a grant for the helmets, locks and lights.
